Death was everywhere. They all stared at me, bumping into one another and slowly coming forward. Sixteen-year-old Zharie Young is absolutely certain her mother morphed into a zombie before her untimely death, but she can't seem to figure out why. Why her mother died, why her aunt doesn't want her around, why all her dreams seem suddenly, hopelessly out of reach. And why, ever since that day, she's been seeing zombies everywhere. Then Bo moves into her apartment building―tall, skateboard in hand, freckles like stars, and an undeniable charm. Z wants nothing to do with him, but when he transforms into a half zombie right before her eyes, something feels different. He contradicts everything she thought she knew about monsters, and she can't help but wonder if getting to know him might unlock the answers to her mother's death. As Zharie sifts through what's real and what's magic, she discovers a new truth about the world: Love can literally change you―for good or for dead. In this surrealist journey of grief, fear, and hope, Britney S. Lewis's debut novel explores love, zombies, and everything in between in an intoxicating amalgam of the real and the fantastic.

Welcome to the non-eloquent review of this amazing book. I wasn't expecting the path this book would go (I purposely don't read synopsises 99% of the time, so it's like Christmas every time I open a book. Once I started, I knew the author was going to tear out my heart (zombie-style?) and she sure did.

When her mother dies and seemingly becomes a zombie, Zharie starts to see them everywhere. When a cute new boy moves into her aunt's apartment complex, she decides to do something about it and befriends Bo, hoping to cure her visions. But Bo is a half-zombie and the more she gets to know him, the less zombie-like he appears. She's also coping with the loss of her mother and her dreams of dancing as well as wondering what really happened between her sperm donor and her mother.

This is a heartbreaking examination of grief and how people cope with trauma and loss. There are ebbs and flows with grief and I know it well. I lost my heart dog two months ago. He was fifteen and the love of my life. The grief I feel over his loss comes and goes. There are times when I'm happy and moments when the grief hits me like a brick wall. This happens to Z, and when she's having beautiful moments, Bo looks less like a zombie. When she's overwhelmed and feeling the loss, he's deformed and leaking blood and goo.

The relationship between Bo and Z is sweet and everything I love in a YA romance. Z's friends are also very supportive even when she tells her best friend about her hallucinations. Her aunt could have been a bit nicer, but by the end, I began to understand where she was coming from. Again, grief hits people differently.

I haven't read anything quite like this and I'm glad it exists. There are some wonderful moments in coping with grief, abandonment, and change that young adults and adults alike will appreciate.
