The Sky Blues: Giveaway and Review

I am so happy to be part of the blog tour for

THE SKY BLUES by ROBBIE COUCH

This tour is hosted by Turn the Page Tours

You can find the entire tour schedule here

This contemporary queer book releases on April 6th and is published by Simon and Schuster for Young Readers. I received a complimentary copy in exchange my an honest review.

Sky’s small town turns absolutely claustrophobic when his secret promposal plans get leaked to the entire school in this witty, heartfelt, and ultimately hopeful debut novel for fans of What if it’s Us? and I Wish You All the Best.

Sky Baker may be openly gay, but in his small, insular town, making sure he was invisible has always been easier than being himself. Determined not to let anything ruin his senior year, Sky decides to make a splash at his high school’s annual beach bum party by asking his crush, Ali, to prom—and he has thirty days to do it.

What better way to start living loud and proud than by pulling off the gayest promposal Rock Ledge, Michigan, has ever seen?

Then, Sky’s plans are leaked by an anonymous hacker in a deeply homophobic e-blast that quickly goes viral. He’s fully prepared to drop out and skip town altogether—until his classmates give him a reason to fight back by turning his thirty-day promposal countdown into a school-wide hunt to expose the e-blast perpetrator.

But what happens at the end of the thirty days? Will Sky get to keep his hard-won visibility? Or will his small-town blues stop him from being his true self?

MY REVIEW

What a fantastic read! I loved the positivity and the diversity in this book. It's been a long time since I've read anything that gave me the same feelings as when I read Simon Vs The Homosapien Agenda. Sky is not just his sexual orientation; he is so much more than that. He's self-conscious about the scar on his chest left there after a horrible tragedy that took the life of his father when he was very young. He's worried about college, and his life after his mother kicked him out when he came out as gay. There's so much that could bring Sky down, but he doesn't let it. Most of this is attributed to his amazing support system in his friends and teacher.

I loved seeing supportive adults, as well as Sky's yearbook teacher, Mrs. Winter. It reminded me a lot of a teacher I had in fourth grade who was the one to pull me out of my self-imposed silence and was the first to tell me how good of a writer I was. I remember those words to this day, and to see someone like that depcited in a book warms my heart.

The one thing I didn't enjoy that did NOT affect my rating was the ending. it did close things together in a neat bow, but It felt...rushed. I would have loved to see the prom they all put together. Perhaps we will get a sequel?

Overall, I enjoyed this book. It hooked me from the start and had me up until 1 a.m binge reading. The messages within the story are what really got me, one of them being how to fight for your friends, and that whatever happens in high school doesn't have to define you.

There is only so much you can do on your own, but when you have the love of your friends, the sky is the limit.
